Baltimore block party shooting victims include more than a dozen minors, police say

By JULIO CORTEZ and HOLLY RAMER (Associated Press) BALTIMORE (AP) — Gunfire erupted at a block party in Baltimore on Sunday — killing two people, wounding 28 and leaving an extensive crime scene that marred the U.S. holiday weekend, police said. Three of the wounded were in critical condition and more than a dozen were under 18. The shooting took place just after 12:30 a.m. when at least two people opened fire at a block party in the Brooklyn Homes area in the southern part of the city, said Richard Worley, Baltimore’s acting police commissioner. No arrests had been made by late afternoon....

Jorge Soler will join Luis Arraez as Marlins at All-Star Game in Seattle

NEW YORK — The Miami Marlins will have a second representative at the All-Star Game in Seattle after slugger Jorge Soler was added as a reserve on Sunday evening. For the Cuban-born Soler, the 2021 World Series Most Valuable Player while with the Atlanta Braves, it will be his first All-Star Game. Soler, who has 22 home runs, also had 22 round-trippers for the Royals on selection day in 2019 but was left off the squad. He was hitting .233 with 55 RBI four years ago and is hitting .241 with 47 RBI heading into Monday’s play. Soler joins Luis Arraez as Marlins heading to the Pacific Northwest...

Inter Miami draws Austin FC for first point since May 13, though winless skid stretches to eight

FORT LAUDERDALE — Newly named Inter Miami coach Tata Martino was in the building Saturday night at DRV PNK Stadium. Perhaps it added some extra juice to Inter Miami, but, as he awaits his necessary work documents, he could only watch from a suite as his future club extended its winless streak to eight games. On one hand, the 1-1 draw against Austin FC was Inter Miami’s first point since May 13. But on the other side, it was a disappointing result for an Inter Miami squad — now 5-13-2 and still last in the Eastern Conference — that failed the bury a handful of scoring chances. “I spoke with the...

Panthers winger Anthony Duclair traded to San Jose for center Steven Lorentz, draft pick

Saturday was not just a day of free agent signings for the Florida Panthers. They made another big move at the opening of free agency, this time via a trade. Anthony Duclair, a three-year winger with the Panthers, has been dealt to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The move clears just under $2 million in cap space for the Panthers next season. Lorentz, 27, played 80 games for the Sharks last season, recording 10 goals and nine assists. He was a 2015 seventh-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes before being traded to San Jose last summer. Rumors...

By SYLVIE CORBET, JOHN LEICESTER and LEWIS JOLY (Associated Press) NANTERRE, France (AP) — Young rioters clashed with police and looted stores overnight Friday in a fourth night of unrest in France triggered by the deadly police shooting of a teen, piling more pressure on President Emmanuel Macron after he appealed to parents to keep children off the streets and blamed social media for fueling violence. While the situation appeared to be somewhat calmer compared to previous nights, turmoil gripped several cities across the country. Firefighters in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre, where the...

First smoky air, now clouds of bugs. Winged aphids invade New York City

By BOBBY CAINA CALVAN (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — By the time Martin DuPain got back home from a short walk Thursday afternoon, he was covered with a smattering of tiny flying critters. They were in his hair, on his shirt and in his nose. When he sneezed, the bugs came flying out. As if the smoke and haze sweeping in from wildfires in Canada weren’t enough, New York City has been invaded in recent days with plumes of flying insects that have become both a nuisance and a source of fascination — what were they, where’d they come from and will they ever go away? Another unwanted Canadian...
