Arthur Frommer, travel guide innovator, has died at 95

By BETH HARPAZ NEW YORK (AP) — Arthur Frommer, whose “Europe on 5 Dollars a Day” guidebooks revolutionized leisure travel by convincing average Americans to take budget vacations abroad, has died. He was 95. Frommer died from complications of pneumonia, his daughter Pauline Frommer said Monday. “My father opened up the world to so many people,” she said. “He believed deeply that travel could be an enlightening activity and one that did not require a big budget.” Frommer began writing about travel while serving in the U.S. Army in Europe in the 1950s. When a guidebook he wrote for American...

Trump names Karoline Leavitt as youngest ever White House press secretary

By MICHELLE L. PRICE WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Friday named Karoline Leavitt, his campaign press secretary, to serve as his White House press secretary. Leavitt, 27, currently a spokesperson for Trump’s transition, would be the youngest White House press secretary in history. Previously that distinction went to Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he took the position in 1969 in Richard Nixon’s administration. “Karoline Leavitt did a phenomenal job as the National Press Secretary on my Historic Campaign, and I am pleased to announce she will serve as White...

Map: Will Tropical Storm Sara hit Florida? Here’s the latest track

A weather system in the western Caribbean Sea is expected to form into Tropical Storm Sara and has the potential to take a turn toward Florida by the middle of next week, forecasters said. Although it’s far too early to be certain of what, if any, impacts will be felt in the Sunshine State, some computer models have indicated Sara could be something to watch. The system is currently off the coast of Central America and may interact with land before entering the Gulf of Mexico, diminishing its potential intensification and making it too soon to determine if the storm will become a...

Trump expected to name Marco Rubio as secretary of state

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida as his secretary of state, three people familiar with his thinking said Monday, as Trump moves rapidly to fill out his foreign policy and national security team. Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, the people said, but appeared to have settled on Rubio, whom he also considered when choosing his running mate this year. Rubio was elected to the Senate in 2010 and has staked out a position as a foreign policy hawk, taking hard lines on China and Iran in particular. He initially found himself at odds...

South Florida Congressman Jared Moskowitz said in a statement Friday that a man who was recently arrested in South Florida had his name on a “target list” and that there was a “potential plot on (his) life.” Lt. Horrific new details in Orlando mass shooting that killed UCF student from South Florida

A newly released report on Orlando’s deadly Halloween mass shooting indicates that one of the two victims was shot during a confrontation between the alleged shooter and a witness, rather than being targeted during the incident. The Thursday release of the arrest affidavit for accused gunman Jaylen Edgar offered little indication of what led up to the mayhem that wounded seven people in addition to killing two. But it tells a chilling tale of how the carnage unfolded. Moments after shooting 25-year-old Tyrek Hill — a tow truck driver who was his first victim — in the face around 1 a.m....
