Matt Mervis hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 11-4 on Sunday in the rubber game of the weekend set.
Miami manager Clayton McCullough sent Mervis up to hit for Jonah Bride with two outs and two on. Mervis drove a fastball from Jorge López deep to center for his fifth homer this season.
Kyle Stowers hit a two-run double as the Marlins pulled away with four runs in the eighth.
Stowers and Eric Wagaman each had three of Miami’s 14 hits. Ronny Henriquez (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

By ALANIS THAMES
SUNRISE — Anton Lundell scored the only goal of the shootout and the Florida Panthers beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Saturday night.
Carter Verhaeghe had a goal and an assist, and Jesse Puljujarvi also scored in regulation for Florida. Vitek Vanecek made 26 saves and stopped all three Buffalo attempts in the shootout.
After a five-game skid at the beginning of April, the Panthers have won three straight as they sit two points behind Tampa Bay for second place in the Atlantic Division.
Rasmus Dahlin and JJ Peterka had power-play goals for the Sabres. Peterka added an assist...

Sandy Alcantara (2-0) allowed four runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, who walked four and struck out one, won his second consecutive start after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2023 and missing all of last season.
Xavier Edwards had two hits and two steals, while Matt Mervis homered for the Marlins.
Eric Wagaman hit an RBI double and Conine followed with a two-run double that...
Hurricanes defense, freshmen shine in spring game
CORAL GABLES — The Hurricanes closed out spring camp on Saturday with their annual spring game at the on-campus Cobb Stadium on Saturday. The defense got the better of the offense, edging their teammates 25-20.
“We feel really good about our spring,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “We really do. We play football and we practice football, and we’re in pads, and the guys did a very good job attacking a very demanding regimen.”
The defense got a key stop early in the spring game, stopping four consecutive goal-line runs.
“As an offensive lineman, what do you think I’m going to say (about...
Nationals, down 4-0, pile up seven unanswered runs to top Marlins
MIAMI (AP) — Nathaniel Lowe hit a bases-clearing, go-ahead double in the eighth inning, James Wood added a 400-foot homer in the ninth and the Washington Nationals scored seven unanswered runs in a 7-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday night.
The Nationals trailed for the first five innings before scoring seven straight, including three in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Lowe’s hit down the left-field line — that was barely fair — came on the 10th pitch he saw from Anthony Bender, giving the Nationals their first lead at 5-4.
Wood’s homer was his fifth of the season, with 11 RBIs....
Winderman’s view: Heat need more than this Wiggins for postseason success
NEW ORLEANS — Observations and other notes of interest from Friday night’s 153-104 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans:
– If the reason for going with the regulars Friday night was one last-ditch attempt at continuity, then when it comes to Andrew Wiggins, that remains an abstract.
– Back for a second game after missing six with a hamstring issue, Wiggins hardly looked playoff-ready.
– Again as little more than an ancillary element of the rotation.
– As he was in Wednesday night’s loss in Chicago.
– Hamstrings certainly can be tricky.
– And it’s not as if Wiggins didn’t leave Wednesday...
Heat highest-scoring win ever does nothing to prevent No. 10 fate; will open play-in Wednesday in Chicago
NEW ORLEANS – The reality of a regular season that soured months ago hit home Friday night for the Miami Heat: They’ No. 10.
Despite a 153-104 victory Friday night over the injury-ravaged New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center – the highest-scoring game in the franchise’s 37 seasons – the Heat were locked into the No. 10 and final Eastern Conference play-in seed when the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls, like the Heat, won their Friday night games over equally disinterested, lottery-bound opponents.
That means the path to a sixth-consecutive playoff berth is set for Erik Spoelstra’s...
Marchand scores first Panthers goal in 4-1 win over Red Wings
By TIM REYNOLDS
SUNRISE — Brad Marchand got his first Florida goal to cap a three-goal second period, and the Panthers rallied to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Thursday night for their second consecutive win.
Mackie Samoskevich and Evan Rodrigues also scored in the second, and Aleksander Barkov scored with 5:57 left for the Panthers — getting to 20 goals for the 10th consecutive season.
Alex DeBrincat scored for Detroit, which fell to 6-13-1 in its last 20 games.
The win was the 915th regular-season victory for Panthers coach Paul Maurice, breaking a tie with Barry Trotz for outright...
Judicial watchdog recommends suspension for Broward Judge Gary Farmer
The state’s judicial ethics watchdog on Thursday called for the immediate suspension without pay of Broward Circuit Court Judge Gary Farmer, a former minority leader in the Florida Senate who was ousted from his leadership role by his own colleagues.
Farmer was elected to the bench in 2022, a year after he was forced out of a leadership position by his fellow senate Democrats. But his propensity for speaking his mind as an elected representative followed him into the courtroom, bulldozing over the rules governing the public conduct of judges.
He told one defendant to wear a condom while on...
Winderman’s view: Bulls played like Wednesday meant something; Heat just played
CHICAGO — Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 119-111 loss to the Chicago Bulls:
– First the perspective: All that was at stake in this one was the presumptive right to host a play-in game.
– And even then, it was the right to host a play-in game that doesn’t even assure a playoff berth, but rather just the right to go on the road for another play-in game.
– So, sort of like playing for a playoff booby prize.
– But a prize nonetheless.
– But it still beat the alternative.
– With a loss meaning only road games in the play-in round.
– A reality the Heat now face,...
