No. 3 North Carolina holds off FSU to extend win streak to 10 games

TALLAHASSEE — North Carolina had won seven straight Atlantic Coast Conference games by double digits. On Saturday, the Tar Heels showed they could win a game that was tight in the final minutes. RJ Davis scored 24 points and freshman Elliot Cadeau scored a season-high 16 points to help No. 3 North Carolina rally from an eight-point deficit early in the second half and beat Florida State 75-68. Davis shot 9 of 18 from the floor, although he made just 2 of 8 3-point shots, and surpassed the 20-point mark for the 12th time this season. Cadeau shot 8 of 9 from the free-throw line and had six...

Johnny Dawkins’ poor-shooting UCF prepares for visit from WVU

UCF basketball coach Johnny Dawkins’ message after every game this season, win or lose, has been that his team is learning and it has to respond to what it has learned with each succeeding challenge. At Houston on Saturday, the Knights failed miserably at one part of the learning process but on another front they responded well. So it’s difficult to judge these Knights (11-6, 2-3 Big 12) as they head into another tough conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home against a revitalized West Virginia squad. Controversial transfer Mikey Williams not allowed to enroll at UCF for months |...

The win snapped a string of four losses in five games for Clemson (13-5, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) and snapped Florida State’s run of five straight wins. The teams played to a 30-30 draw through the first half. The Tigers opened the second with a 9-2 run and never trailed the rest of the way. Florida State got within 39-37 on a 3-pointer by Darin Green Jr. and Taylor Bol Bowen hit the second of two free throws at about the five-minute mark to make...

GATORS PODCAST: Is Florida coach Billy Napier’s seat hot or not? (Ep. 211)

By virtually any measure, Billy Napier entered 2024 squarely on the hot seat after consecutive losing seasons and a substandard brand of football. Florida AD Scott Stricklin disagrees and passionately backs the coach he hired to turn around the Gators. Will Stricklin be the one who ultimately decides Napier’s fate? During the latest Swamp Things, Mark and Edgar agree Stricklin has to stand by his man but wonder whether Napier’s approach to the transfer portal relative to the Gators’ competition is the latest red flag. Scott Stricklin on Billy Napier (:00) Adjusting coaching staff...

Seminoles beat Hurricanes to extend road winning streak vs. Miami

CORAL GABLES — The Hurricanes’ basketball team has achieved new heights over the previous two seasons, but one accomplishment still eludes them: beating rival Florida State at home. The Seminoles (11-6, 5-1 ACC) came to the Watsco Center having won five straight games in Coral Gables, and they extended that streak to six with an 84-75 win over Miami (12-5, 3-3 ACC) on Wednesday night. The Hurricanes struggled with the Seminoles in the first half, falling behind by 10 points as the first half came to an end.  The deficit got wider early in the second half, as FSU went up 53-37 early in the...

Dalton Knecht scores 39 to lead No. 6 Tennessee past Florida

By Al Lesar Associated Press KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dalton Knecht scored a career-high 39 points and had 8 rebounds to lead No. 6 Tennessee past Florida 85-66 on Tuesday. Jonas Aidoo had 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to help the Volunteers (13-4, 3-1 SEC) win their 12th straight at home. UF AD Scott Stricklin insists Billy Napier is not on hot seat: ‘It has nothing to do with reality’   “Anytime Jonas is aggressive and locked in, he’s a major factor,” said Tennessee coach Rick Barnes. “The guys are starting to understand each other where they need the ball.” Knecht averaged 32 points...

Gators bounce back with resounding win against Arkansas

GAINESVILLE — The Florida men’s basketball team and star Riley Kugel followed their most embarrassing performance with an emphatic response to avoid an inescapable hole in SEC play. The Gators’ 90-68 win Saturday against Arkansas was the bounce-back performance coach Todd Golden’s squad (11-5, 1-2 SEC) and Kugel needed after a 103-85 lopsided loss Wednesday at Ole Miss. The Rebels were the first opponent to crack the century mark against UF since Tennessee in 2008, and Kugel failed to score during just four minutes after getting crossways with his coach. But against Arkansas, to 6-foot-5...

After huge win, UCF gets even bigger news with commitment from 5-star Mikey Williams

Five-star swing player Mikey Williams, the No. 26 player in the nation for the Class of 2023 (247 Sports), has committed to UCF, according to ESPN. Williams, who signed with Memphis last year, never played a game for the Tigers due to a criminal matter involving a shooting outside his San Diego County home earlier last year. He entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday and news circulated Friday that he had committed to play for the Knights. The huge news is coming off the Knights’ shocking 65-60 victory over No. 3 Kansas on Wednesday night at Addition Financial Arena. UCF (10-4) hosts...

Martin makes last-second free throws to lift No. 24 FAU over Tulane, 85-84

NEW ORLEANS — Alijah Martin hit two of three free throws after being fouled by Tulane’s Jaylen Forbes on a desperation 3-point attempt that was not close to going in with less than a second left, and No. 24 Florida Atlantic escaped with a 85-84 victory over the Green Wave on Thursday night. Martin missed the second free throw, but made the third to secure a result that helped FAU avoid what would have been a second straight loss after being upset at Charlotte — where they fell 70-68 on free throws with 1.7 seconds left. Nick Boyd tied a career high with 21 points to lead FAU (12-4, 2-1...
