A South Florida woman was arrested in Coral Springs last month after allegedly submitting nearly 100 fraudulent petitions in support of the marijuana constitutional amendment in 2023, state officials said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement first began investigating Jessica Sonia Humphreys, 24, of Miami, in January 2023 after the Escambia County Supervisor of Elections Office reported to agents what it believed were multiple fraudulent petitions submitted by Humphreys in support of the amendment to legalize marijuana, FDLE said in a news release Tuesday night.
Humphreys had worked as...
What officially caused the 2021 Champlain Towers South collapse that killed 98 people is closer to having an answer, as federal officials on Tuesday announced a tentative end to their investigation and that they’ve honed in on a singular failure in the building’s infrastructure that triggered the tragedy.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology said it plans to finish its technical work by the end of 2025 and begin drafting its reports. In the last four years, investigators initially had 12 hypotheses, which whittled down to three “higher-likelihood” scenarios.
Now evidence is...
Paramedics flew a boy to a Miami-Dade County hospital after he was bitten by a shark in the Florida Keys on Monday afternoon, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.
The bite happened around 3:25 p.m. in the ocean off Key Largo. Monroe County Fire Rescue paramedics flew the boy to Jackson Memorial Hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
Monroe Sheriff Rick Ramsay told the Herald that the 8-year-old boy was snorkeling on Horseshoe Reef when he was bitten. He was in surgery Monday evening, Ramsay said.
A Monroe County Fire Rescue spokeswoman confirmed the boy was bitten above the knee, and a...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Monday he will award former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, two days after his longtime political ally was seriously injured in a car crash.
The decision places the award on a man once lauded for leading New York after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and later sanctioned by courts and disbarred for amplifying false claims about the 2020 election. Giuliani was also criminally charged in two states; he has denied wrongdoing.
Trump in a statement on social media called Giuliani the...
Two days after Fort Lauderdale agreed to fight a state order to remove a rainbow pride flag and three other artsy designs painted on a local street, the state fired off a letter listing seven more sites that need to be removed.
The letter, sent Friday at 6:32 p.m. and signed by Florida Department of Transportation District Secretary Steven Braun, gives the city a hearing date of Sept. 15 to make its case for keeping the street art, but warns there will be no change of heart.
Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman suggested the state find better things to do than crack down on street...

NEW YORK (AP) — This would not have been easy for anyone, and it was not easy for Coco Gauff. She is aware of the expectations of others. She has her own expectations, too, of course.
An exit in the second round of the U.S. Open on Thursday night simply would not do. And double-faulting her way to defeat might just be the worst possible scenario. So after she missed two consecutive serves to get broken and fall behind in the opening set against Donna Vekic in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gauff felt overwhelmed and couldn’t hide it.
The tears came. They wouldn’t stop. She...
Fort Lauderdale will not bow down to the state’s demand that it remove four street art designs — including a rainbow-colored pride flag painted on a street near the beach.
Before a packed house, commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday night to appeal the state’s order to remove the pavement art by Sept. 4 or risk the state removing it.
Mayor Dean Trantalis warned of what might happen if the city were to back down to the state on what he called a draconian order.
“You have to ask, where does it end?” he said. “Tonight we must stand our ground. We cannot be bullied into submission and to...
Mario Chalmers collected another championship moment and made former Miami Heat teammate Michael Beasley a champion in the process in sparking Miami 305 to the Big3 championship Sunday in Orlando.
Off an assist from Beasley, Chalmers drained the game-winning 3-pointer to decide the 52-48 victory over the Chicago Triplets in the title game of the halfcourt three-on-three league.
For Chalmers, a member of the Heat’s championship teams in 2012 and ’13 alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, it gave him a championship on five different levels.

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 14-6, in their preseason finale at Hard Rock Stadium and looked good in the process.
Quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson each led touchdown drives, the defensive front seven produced three sacks (edge rushers Chop Robinson and Derrick McLendon had one apiece and fellow edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb had a half-sack apiece), and running back Ollie Gordon II (eight carries, 43 yards) had a good night.
By the way, safety John Saunders’ interception with 1:52 remaining means the Dolphins sealed their...
A federal judge on Thursday barred the DeSantis and Trump administrations from bringing new detainees to Alligator Alcatraz and demanded the state begin closing out operations at the immigration detention facility within 60 days.
U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, in her 82-page ruling, prohibited the state and federal governments from bringing additional detainees to the detention center, which has drawn mass protests. She also stopped any expansion of the detention facility, including adding industrial lighting or erecting any new buildings, such as tents or dormitories.
Though her...
