Trump leads GOP rightward march and other takeaways from the Iowa caucuses

By Nicholas Riccardi and Brian Slodysko, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s iron grip on the Republican Party has been clear since the day he announced he would make another run for the White House 14 months ago. It can be seen in the party’s ideological shift even further to the right on cultural issues and, especially, on immigration policy. Iowa Republicans were a clear reflection of that on Monday night, delivering the former president an emphatic victory. They channeled his anger, and his view that basically everything President Joe Biden has done has been a “disaster.” About...

US military strikes another Houthi-controlled site after warning ships to avoid parts of Red Sea

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military early Saturday struck another Houthi-controlled site in Yemen that it had determined was putting commercial vessels in the Red Sea at risk, two U.S. officials said. Associated Press journalists in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, heard one loud explosion. The first day of strikes Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets. However, the U.S. determined the additional location, a radar site, still presented a threat to maritime traffic, one official said. The officials spoke anonymously to the AP to discuss an operation that hadn’t yet been publicly announced. President...

Unsealing of documents related to decades of Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of girls concludes

NEW YORK (AP) — A final round of legal documents released Tuesday in a court case related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of teenage girls was made up of testimony transcripts that were already largely public and dealt with allegations about misconduct by several rich and influential men whose names have been known for a decade or more. The unsealed files included a 2016 deposition of Virginia Giuffre, a woman who said Epstein sexually abused her and arranged for her to have sexual encounters with men including Britain’s Prince Andrew starting when she was 17. It also included a transcript...

‘King of the NRA’: Civil trial scrutinizes lavish spending by gun rights group’s longtime leader

By MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — The longtime head of National Rifle Association operated as the “King of the NRA,” spending lavishly on himself, punishing dissent and showering allies with country club memberships and no-show contracts, a lawyer for the New York attorney general’s office told jurors Monday. Wayne LaPierre’s methods as the NRA’s executive vice president and chief executive officer allowed him to operate the powerful gun rights organization “as Wayne’s World for decades,” Assistant Attorney General Monica Connell argued in an opening statement in a civil...

At least 19 hurt in Manhattan subway collision

Evan Simko-Bednarski | New York Daily News NEW YORK — At least 19 people were hurt Thursday when a No. 1 train leaving the W. 96th St. and Broadway subway station jumped the track after an apparent collision with an MTA work train, said transit sources and the Fire Department. An FDNY spokesman told the New York Daily News that injuries were still being tallied, but none appeared life threatening. Service was suspended along the bulk of the No. 1, 2 and 3 lines in Manhattan as a result during the evening rush hour. The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m., with the crew of the uptown-bound...

Unsealed court records offer new detail on old sex abuse allegations against Jeffrey Epstein

BY MICHAEL R. SISAK, REBECCA BOONE and DAVID B. CARUSO (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — Amid great hype, a court began to release a new batch of previously secret court documents late Wednesday related to Jeffrey Epstein, the jet-setting financier who killed himself in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. Social media has been rife in recent weeks with posts speculating the documents would include a list of rich and powerful men who were Epstein’s “clients” or “co-conspirators.” There was no such list. The initial collection of around 40 documents made public largely contained...

Florida appeals court rejects minor’s attempt to get abortion without consent

TALLAHASSEE — For the second time in less than three weeks, an appeals court Wednesday rejected a minor’s attempt to have an abortion without notifying and getting consent from a parent or guardian. But the ruling by a three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal could have broader implications for future requests by minors to receive waivers from a parental notification and consent requirement in state law. The minor, identified by the pseudonym Jane Doe, went to the appeals court after Leon County Circuit Judge Lance Neff turned down her request for such a waiver. In what appears...

Trump ballot ban appealed to US Supreme Court by Colorado Republican Party

By NICHOLAS RICCARDI (Associated Press) DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Republican Party on Wednesday appealed that state’s supreme court decision that found former President Donald Trump is ineligible for the presidency, the potential first step to a showdown at the nation’s highest court over the meaning of a 155-year-old constitutional provision that bans from office those who “engaged in insurrection.” The first impact of the appeal is to extend the stay of the 4-3 ruling from Colorado’s highest court, which put its decision on pause until Jan. 4, the day before the state’s primary ballots are...

Prosecutors oppose Sen. Bob Menendez’s effort to delay May bribery trial until July

By LARRY NEUMEISTER (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — Federal prosecutors on Tuesday urged a judge to reject U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s request to delay his bribery trial scheduled for next spring by two months, until July. Prosecutors argued against the postponement a week after defense lawyers offered multiple reasons why they say a trial of the Democrat and codefendants, including his wife, should be delayed. The senator gave up his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after his September arrest. Prosecutors said the original May 6 trial date was appropriate and drew...

VIDEO | Suspects fired over 12 shots in Wilton Manors rental home killing

The street was quiet. Only the sound of crickets chirping could be heard — until more than a dozen gunshots broke the silence. The Broward Sheriff’s Office released home surveillance video Tuesday that includes the moment unidentified suspects arrived at a vacation rental home in Wilton Manors and shot and killed 44-year-old Arland Cata. The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release detectives are hoping to generate new leads. Shortly before 11 p.m. Sept. 10, surveillance video from a home near the vacation rental in the 500 block of Northwest 28th Court recorded a car parked outside with the...
