By JAKE OFFENHARTZ and MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Rep. George Santos, infamous for fabricating his life story, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges he duped donors, stole from his campaign and lied to Congress about being a millionaire, all while cheating to collect unemployment benefits he didn’t deserve. Afterward, he said he wouldn’t drop his reelection bid and defied calls to resign. Santos’ 13-count federal indictment was a reckoning for a web of fraud and deceit that prosecutors say overlapped with the New York Republican’s fantastical public...

A veteran Broward Sheriff’s detective was arrested Tuesday on charges of official misconduct and extortion after an investigation found he had falsified information in numerous sex crime cases and closed the cases without fully investigating them, the Sheriff’s Office said. Det. Demetrious Campbell, 48, has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2002. He is now suspended without pay, and investigators are reviewing many of his cases, Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release Tuesday evening. The judgment adds to Trump’s legal woes and offers vindication to Carroll, whose allegations had been mocked and dismissed by Trump for years. She...

It also signals a major change to the Ag Reserve, which county voters overwhelmingly agreed in 1999 to keep mostly rural. The approval now goes to the state for review and will come back to the commission Aug. 30 for final adoption. “We are pleased the Palm Beach County Commission saw merit...
