Heat turn focus to regular season after loss in exhibition finale in Houston
The Miami Heat’s exhibition finale was more like half of an exhibition, with coach Erik Spoelstra pulling all five of Friday night’s starters at halftime of the 110-104 loss to the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center.
And even the first half hardly was the whole Heat, with Jimmy Butler making it an entire preseason without action, back in Miami following a dental procedure.
Still, even in closing the preseason at 2-3, Spoelstra felt tangible progress was achieved.
“I thought we had a really good camp,” he said. “I thought we’ve been able to get a lot of things accomplished. Different guys at...

A main suspect in the killing of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been arrested after 2 years
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A former justice official considered one of the main suspects in the killing of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 was arrested Thursday in Haiti’s capital after being on the run for more than two years, police said.
Joseph Badio once worked for Haiti’s Ministry of Justice and at the government’s anti-corruption unit until he was fired for alleged ethics violations weeks before the assassination.
Badio was arrested in the neighborhood of Petion Vile in Port-au-Prince, National Police spokesman Garry Desrosiers said.
Moïse was shot 12 times at his private...
Panthers get two early goals from newcomers, hold off intense rally to edge Leafs in home opener
SUNRISE — Kevin Stenlund and Oliver Ekman-Larsson got their first Florida goals, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots and the Panthers won their home opener by topping the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 in a playoff rematch Thursday night.
Stenlund scored with 2:52 left in the first, Ekman-Larsson made it 2-0 with seven seconds left in the opening period and that was enough for Bobrovsky. Sam Reinhart added a short-handed empty-net goal as time expired.
Mitch Marner scored his first goal of the season, coming on the power play, midway through the second period for Toronto. Ilya Samsonov made 21 saves...
Adebayo gets work in early then sits with rest of Heat starters in exhibition loss to Nets
MIAMI – The lone given Wednesday for the Miami Heat was Bam Adebayo, with the rest of the projected starters given the night off.
So Adebayo got to work early, with 12 points in nine first-quarter minutes on the way to 14 points, six rebounds and three assists, sitting out the second half of the 107-104 exhibition loss to the Brooklyn Nets at Kaseya Center.
With Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, Kyle Lowry rested for moments more meaningful, Adebayo was active early with his midrange jumper, before yielding the floor to those trying to crack the rotation or make the roster ahead of next...
With little controversy, Palm Beach County Schools support LGBTQ history resolution
A resolution to honor LGBTQ History Month created division and strife in two South Florida counties, but in Palm Beach County, it sailed through with little controversy.
The School Board voted 5-0 with no discussion Wednesday evening to recognize October as LGBTQ History Month. The vote followed a half hour of public comments, where almost all speakers voiced support for it.
Several speakers told personal stories about their own journey as an LGBTQ person or loving someone who is gay or transgender.
“Acknowledging the existence of queer people through history, we are proving the fact that...

NEWARK, N.J. — Sam Reinhart moved up to the top line and scored two goals and the defending Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers held off a late rally by New Jersey in posting a 4-3 victory over the Devils on Monday night.
Carter Verhaeghe and Niko Mikkola also scored goals and Matthew Tkachuk had two assists for the Panthers, who had opened the season with losses at Minnesota and Winnipeg.
Sergei Bobrovsky carried a shutout into the third period but saw Erik Haula, Michael McLeod and Jesper Bratt tally to get New Jersey within a goal with 2:23 to play. The 35-year-old who has...
Former NFL receiver Antonio Brown arrested in Broward, accused of not paying child support
Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown was arrested in Broward County Sunday on a warrant for allegedly failing to pay child support, court records say.

The affidavit did not contain further details.
The arrest warrant, issued in early August, was related to a 2013 paternity case involving his...
Herro, Adebayo sizzle in Butler exhibition absence as Heat down Grizzlies
MIAMI – No, not a formal dress rehearsal, not with Jimmy Butler out for the third time in as many exhibitions.
But Sunday night’s 132-124 preseason victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at Kaseya Center gave some hint of who and what the Miami Heat might be when they open their regular season Oct. 25 against the visiting Detroit Pistons.
Kevin Love and Kyle Lowry each started for the second time in as many appearances this preseason.
Haywood Highsmith was cast as both a perimeter and power component, some type of rotation role now seemingly likely.
Thomas Bryant again played as preferred...
