New signs welcoming people from other parts of the country to Florida are designed to let them know they are entering a “free state.”
On Tuesday, the Florida Department of Transportation revealed the new signs that greet drivers as they cross into the Sunshine State and encourage them to ‘Hurry Back’ as they go. The updated look will dot all major roadways in and out of Florida, it added.
“No better way to celebrate Independence Day Weekend than new state line signs welcoming Floridians and visitors to the Free State of Florida!” FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue wrote on social media.

Broward judge could face public reprimand for actions during 2022 re-election campaign
A state panel Monday recommended that a Broward County judge receive a public reprimand for actions during a 2022 re-election campaign, including forwarding potentially false or unverified information about her opponent to a political club.
The Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission made the recommendation to the state Supreme Court after an investigation of Judge Mardi Levey Cohen.
A document filed at the Supreme Court said Levey Cohen was accused, in part, of forwarding an email in July 2022 to a representative of the Wynmoor Condominium Democratic Club and did not “take sufficient...
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes an All-Star just 2 months after debut; Closer Tanner Scott the Marlins’ lone representative
By WES CROSBY
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes’ first All-Star selection was as speedy as his fastball.
Just eight weeks after his major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 22-year-old right-hander was selected Sunday by Major League Baseball for the National League roster in the July 16 game at Arlington, Texas.
“It’s happened quick,” Skenes said. “Hopefully, I’ll have some time when I get out there to take it all in and be able to experience it all. It’s just a really cool opportunity all around.”
Skenes’ final outing before the All-Star break is likely to be midweek, so he could be...
‘Freak of nature’ Kel’el Ware powerful, polished as Heat push past Kings 102-86 in summer league
Sunday was an affirmation for the Miami Heat at the summer-league California Classic at Chase Center in San Francisco.
Just as previous Heat first-round picks Nikola Jovic (2022) and Jaime Jaquez Jr. (2023) had breakout moments in their initial summer-league games, Kel’el Ware experienced those moments in a 102-86 victory over a similar team of rookies and young free agents from the Sacramento Kings.
From alley-oop finishes to an intriguing variety of post moves, the 7-footer taken with the No. 15 pick out of Indiana closed with 26 points and 11 rebounds in a polished and powerful...
Swider has his moments, but Heat blown out 105-66 in summer debut for draft picks Ware, Larsson
In a game the Miami Heat were hoping to learn a few new things, they had to settle for a familiar reminder in Saturday night’s summer-league opener at the California Classic against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center.
In the debut of Heat draft picks Kel’el Ware and Pelle Larsson, forward Cole Swider showed the outside stroke that had him on a Heat two-way contract last season.
It proved to be one of few Heat bright spots in a 105-66 loss to a similar roster of young players and free agents from the Warriors.
“I think right now with just the first game, everybody is trying to figure...

MIAMI (AP) — Dane Myers had a go-ahead two run homer in the seventh inning and finished with three hits and three RBIs as the Miami Marlins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Saturday in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the major leagues.

The 28-year-old Myers, a converted pitcher, platoons with right-fielder Jesús Sánchez and usually hits against left-handers. But when Sánchez experienced hamstring...

Fewer hurricanes in July? Here’s how Hurricane Beryl and dust could affect storms
Now that Hurricane Beryl has traveled across the Atlantic and broken numerous records, such as being the earliest Category 5 storm in recorded history, what’s next for hurricane development in the Atlantic?
The good news is that powerful hurricanes such as Beryl often consume heat energy, and can create upwellings of cool water. That cooler water then curbs storm formation.
But Beryl may not play out that way, said climate researcher Brian McNoldy with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science.
McNoldy checked his data points and said that...
