A state panel Monday recommended that a Broward County judge receive a public reprimand for actions during a 2022 re-election campaign, including forwarding potentially false or unverified information about her opponent to a political club. The Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission made the recommendation to the state Supreme Court after an investigation of Judge Mardi Levey Cohen. A document filed at the Supreme Court said Levey Cohen was accused, in part, of forwarding an email in July 2022 to a representative of the Wynmoor Condominium Democratic Club and did not “take sufficient...

DeSantis vetoes bill to regulate vacation rentals

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday vetoed a measure aimed at regulating vacation rentals, saying the proposal would create “bureaucratic red tape” for local officials. Oversight of vacation rentals for years has been a thorny issue for the Legislature, as advertising for properties on platforms such as Airbnb has ballooned. This year’s bill (SB 280) — a priority of Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples — also was contentious, with the Senate voting 23-16 to approve it and the House passing it in a 60-51 vote in the waning days of the legislative session. Champions of...

TALLAHASSEE — A state panel will meet in July to consider revising a “financial impact statement” that has touched off a legal fight as Floridians prepare to vote this fall on a proposed constitutional amendment about abortion rights. But while revisions could be coming, state lawyers Thursday argued that an appeals court should reject a Leon County circuit judge’s ruling that would force changes in the financial impact statement. The state lawyers filed a 50-page brief at the 1st District Court of Appeal contending that Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper did not have the authority to...

Trump paints dark picture of America, promises rosy future if he defeats Biden

Celebrating his birthday, former President Donald Trump presented a dark vision of America that he said could only be transformed one way — with his return as president. He said the country was hobbled by rising prices, endangered by criminals from other countries  and threatened by terrorists he claimed are roaming the nation. “This is the most important election that our country has ever had because we’re a failing nation. And we can’t be a failing nation for long,” he said. Trump’s declarations came Friday night during a combination rally and birthday celebration in West Palm Beach...

WEST PALM BEACH (AP) — Days after a shark attack in the Florida panhandle cost teenager Lulu Gribbin her left hand and right leg, her mother said the first words she uttered after surgery were “I made it.” Gribbin was one of three people injured in shark attacks Friday over the course of about 90 minutes in Walton County. In a post on Caringbridge.org, Lulu Gribbin’s mother, Ann Blair Gribbin, said the attack happened during her first mother-daughter beach trip with Lulu. She recounted the scene as “something out of a movie” and said her daughter was on a sand bar in waist-high water...
