Inter Miami draws Austin FC for first point since May 13, though winless skid stretches to eight

FORT LAUDERDALE — Newly named Inter Miami coach Tata Martino was in the building Saturday night at DRV PNK Stadium. Perhaps it added some extra juice to Inter Miami, but, as he awaits his necessary work documents, he could only watch from a suite as his future club extended its winless streak to eight games. On one hand, the 1-1 draw against Austin FC was Inter Miami’s first point since May 13. But on the other side, it was a disappointing result for an Inter Miami squad — now 5-13-2 and still last in the Eastern Conference — that failed the bury a handful of scoring chances. “I spoke with the...

Panthers winger Anthony Duclair traded to San Jose for center Steven Lorentz, draft pick

Saturday was not just a day of free agent signings for the Florida Panthers. They made another big move at the opening of free agency, this time via a trade. Anthony Duclair, a three-year winger with the Panthers, has been dealt to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The move clears just under $2 million in cap space for the Panthers next season. Lorentz, 27, played 80 games for the Sharks last season, recording 10 goals and nine assists. He was a 2015 seventh-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes before being traded to San Jose last summer. Rumors...

First smoky air, now clouds of bugs. Winged aphids invade New York City

By BOBBY CAINA CALVAN (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — By the time Martin DuPain got back home from a short walk Thursday afternoon, he was covered with a smattering of tiny flying critters. They were in his hair, on his shirt and in his nose. When he sneezed, the bugs came flying out. As if the smoke and haze sweeping in from wildfires in Canada weren’t enough, New York City has been invaded in recent days with plumes of flying insects that have become both a nuisance and a source of fascination — what were they, where’d they come from and will they ever go away? Another unwanted Canadian...

BOSTON — Jean Segura’s infield single broke up Brayan Bello’s no-hit bid with nobody out in the eighth inning, and the Miami Marlins followed with three more hits to break a scoreless tie and beat the Boston Red Sox 2-0 on Thursday night. Bello held the Marlins hitless through seven, retiring major league batting leader Luis Arraez all three times he faced him. Arraez, who also drew an intentional walk in the eighth, saw his batting average drop from .396 to .392. “That guy threw a really good game,” Arraez said. “He was nasty today.” Bello (5-5) struck out five and walked one. He was charged...
