Hurricanes star Cam Ward named a Heisman finalist, though he is a longshot

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward is up for the most prestigious award in college sports.

The Miami signal-caller was one of four players named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy along with Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Ward, who was named the ACC Player of the Year by the conference and the league’s Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press, is considered a longshot to win the coveted award. Hunter is the prohibitive favorite.

UM has had two Heisman winners in program history: quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde and Gino Toretta. Eight Hurricanes have been named Heisman finalists. The last Miami players to be named finalists were quarterback Ken Dorsey and running back Willis McGahee in 2002.

Ward transferred from Washington State to Miami last winter and had arguably the best season by a quarterback in program history. He set UM single-season records in passing yards (4,123) and passing touchdowns (36). He was one of only two 4,000-yard passers this season, trailing only Syracuse’s Kyle McCord. He led the nation in touchdown passes.

The Miami star is also a finalist for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.

Ward also had the best quarterback rating in the nation, according to ESPN. He had the third-best passing grade among quarterbacks with 100 or more snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. Ward’s offensive grade was the best among that group.

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded in a ceremony in New York on Saturday night.
