Broward schools back down on plan to hold graduations in gymnasiums

The Broward School District has agreed to return most graduation ceremonies to rented venues after a plan to move them to three high school gymnasiums generated a firestorm of controversy. Superintendent Howard Hepburn issued a memo to Broward School Board members late Friday announcing the change in plans. Broward schools reverse course on controversial schedule change

A controversial plan to make major changes to Broward middle and high school student schedules was quashed by the School Board on Tuesday. The proposed $35 million cost-cutting measure ended the same way it began a few weeks ago  —behind closed doors. The proposal would have ended traditional block scheduling as well as personalization periods, or study halls, in secondary schools.
