MIAMI – The last time the Miami Heat had won a game:
– Taylor Swift wasn’t yet headed to the Super Bowl.
– Joel Embiid and Luka Doncic had yet to score 70.
– And Ron DeSantis still was a presidential candidate.
That was back on Jan. 15 when there was a one-point escape in overtime at Barclays Center against the Brooklyn Nets.
Much had changed in the interim, except for the losses that extended the Heat’s losing streak to seven, their longest in nearly 16 years.
Wednesday night at Kaseya Center, there finally was an exhale, with a 115-106 victory over the Sacramento Kings, the 1,500th regular-season...
MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Monday night’s 118-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns:
– Monday’s Exhibit of A of The Heat Still Being Too Small?
– Drew Eubanks had 11 first-quarter points for the Suns.
– Drew.
– Eubanks.
– Which can happen when there is no semblance of a combination of size and ambulatory beyond Bam Adebayo.
– Where have you gone Cody Zeller?
– Heat Nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
– Then, at halftime, Eric Gordon stood tied with Eubanks for the Suns’ scoring lead, when Phoenix led by 13.
– As in 35-year-old Eric Gordon.
– Because a 35-year-old can do that...
MIAMI – The last time the Miami Heat lost seven in a row, the consolation prize was Michael Beasley in the 2008 NBA draft lottery.
It doesn’t feel much better at the moment, with Monday night’s 118-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns at Kaseya Center leaving the Heat 0-for-two weeks.
It not only was another loss, it was another bad loss in a streak that started with defensive incompetence in a 121-97 road loss to the lottery-level Toronto Raptors and the two games prior to Monday included a season-worst 33-point home loss to the Boston Celtics and Saturday’s 14-point loss to the New York Knicks at...
MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Thursday night’s 143-110 loss to the Boston Celtics:
– The gap between the Heat and the top of the East?
– It was never more apparent than Thursday night.
– As if the Celtics are in another league.
– Yes, the playoffs are a different animal.
– But these Celtics are not last season’s Celtics.
– Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday have changed that calculus.
– And Derrick White is even better this time around.
– While the Heat certainly looked better than recent games, they didn’t look Celtics good.
– Sure, coaching yet could matter in a playoff...
MIAMI – This is why you don’t lose to the Toronto Raptors, Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic and injury-decimated Memphis Grizzlies.
Because eventually winter will be coming, with the Miami Heat hit with the cold reality of the East-dominating Boston Celtics on Thursday night at Kaseya Center.
Against a rival as loaded as it has been in years, the Heat fell 143-110 as their losing streak reached five, the team’s longest skid in three years.
While the offense came around after two weeks of slumber, the defense seemingly never stood a chance against an opponent bolstered by the offseason additions...
MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 105-96 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies:
– The Terry Rozier acquisition was an interesting move.
– But also an ancillary move.
– It still does not address getting Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo on the same page.
– Unless those three play effectively and efficiently, this doesn’t go anywhere.
– So say all you want about the Heat having four 20-point scorers.
– It still doesn’t mean they can score.
– Because they can’t.
– This time it was 42 points at halftime.
– Forty. Two.
– 4. 2.
– Even more than Rozier, what this...
MIAMI – The Miami Heat did not look Wednesday night like a team that needed a trade to find its footing in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
It looked like a team that needed three or four.
Even with Terry Rozier making his debut after being acquired Tuesday from the Charlotte Hornets for Kyle Lowry and a first-round pick, the Heat continued to have the look of a team stuck in midseason doldrums.
Against an injury ravaged Memphis Grizzlies roster that arguably had just one NBA-level starter available, the Heat fell 105-96 at Kaseya Center to extend their losing streak to four.
The Heat got...
ORLANDO — Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 105-87 loss to the Orlando Magic:
– In a meritocracy, what now with Nikola Jovic?
– Sunday was the 10th consecutive start.
– With diminishing returns.
– Yes, more size than Caleb Martin or Haywood Highsmith at the four.
– But also with zero attention from opposing defenses.
– For some teams, the reasoning would be as simple as allowing for growing pains.
– But this is not a lottery team.
– Or a team in the midst of a long-term plan.
– This is a win-now team.
– Amid a closing Jimmy Butler window.
– Developmental program?
–...
ORLANDO – The Miami Heat’s offense has fallen, and it can’t get up.
Unable to either control or shoot the ball, Erik Spoelstra’s team fell to its third consecutive loss Sunday night, this time a 105-87 setback at the hands of the Orlando Magic at Kia Center.
“It definitely looks bad, it feels bad, but we’ve got to get through it,” guard Tyler Herro said.
Shooting .375 from the field and committing 18 turnovers, the Heat continued their slide to the bottom of the league in offensive efficiency, with a season low in points and field goals.
Not only has the shift into the starting lineup of forward...
TORONTO – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 121-97 loss to the Toronto Raptors:
– Instead of these past two games with Jimmy Butler’s return answering questions, it only seems to have furthered the issue of Butler, Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro together.
– The start on Monday night in Brooklyn was awful.
– This one was awful-er.
– Butler passive, Herro launching and Adebayo trying to find a middle ground has merely provided deficits.
– That’s not to say that it can’t work.
– It’s just not at the moment.
– At least at the outset.
– It’s not an indictment on any of...
