Winderman’s view: Adebayo sets Heat double-double record, with Seikaly present to see his mark fall

MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Monday night’s 106-90 victory over the Washington Wizards: – Like many Heat fans over the years, Rony Seikaly did not have to wait for the finish, – The former Heat center was in the building to see Bam Adebayo break his franchise all-time record for double-doubles. – Mission accomplished with 47.2 seconds to play in the second period when Adebayo secured his 10th rebound of the night. – Already with 12 points at the stage. – Earlier in the period, Seikaly was introduced on the big screen as the franchise’s all-time leader in...

Shorthanded Heat bounce back with 106-90 rout of Wizards

MIAMI – The perfect cure for the hangover of a blown 19-point lead a night earlier? The Washington Wizards, right on schedule for the Miami Heat. Against the NBA’s 30th ranked offense and 28th ranked defense, Erik Spoelstra’s team was able to push past the sting of Sunday night’s overtime loss to the New York Knicks with a 106-90 victory Monday night over the league-worst Wizards. Despite five rotation players being out – Kel’el Ware, Andrew Wiggins, Davion Mitchell, Jaine Jaquez Jr. and Nikola Jovic – the Heat had enough to close out a 3-1 homestand against a schedule that now stiffens...

Winderman’s view: Heat regain their stride, but (play-in) reality is Pistons distancing themselves

MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 131-109 victory over the Atlanta Hawks: – Wednesday was another one of those days when the Heat spoke of hope for a move up the standings. – Of somehow avoiding the play-in round for a third consecutive season. – It is a narrative that is about to expire. – One being punctured by the Detroit Pistons. – Who are for real. – As evidenced by Wednesday night’s 117–97 victory over the Celtics. – To repeat: By 20. – Over the Celtics. – No, Detroit is not going anywhere. – Currently also with the tiebreaker advantage over the...

Heat regain their offensive footing, load up on 3s in 131-109 victory over Hawks

MIAMI – The post-Jimmy Butler reality for the Miami Heat remains similar to the reality of when Butler still was around: Make your 3s, win the game. So after a dreadful performance from beyond the arc in Monday night’s road loss to the Atlanta Hawks, when his team was 7 of 40 on 3-pointers, Erik Spoelstra this time saw the other side of the equation from his team in a 131-109 victory Wednesday night over the Hawks at Kaseya Center. This time, the Heat not only closed 23 of 42 on 3-pointers, but also received quality support for Tyler Herro, whose 24 points proved enough to help the Heat...

Heat don’t have a shot in 98-86 loss in Atlanta, as season turns even more dire

ATLANTA – A microcosm of the season, as in the Miami Heat don’t have a shot? It certainly felt that way in Monday night’s 98-86 loss to the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena, when a made shot practically was reason for celebration and a converted 3-pointer practically an abstract. In falling to 1-6 since trading forward Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors, the Heat this time did not have All-Star guard Tyler Herro carrying the load and therefore found themselves unable to shoulder the load for a second consecutive night. With Herro limited to 11 points a night after scoring 40 in a...

Winderman’s view: Jovic injury a rotation changer for Heat (if not a game changer)

MILWAUKEE — Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 120-113 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks: – Heat coach Erik Spoelstra spoke pregame about how nothing is necessarily set in his rotation since the team’s overhaul at the NBA trading deadline three weeks ago. – It felt otherwise. – Until a jolt was delivered at halftime. – First, the Heat stayed with their preferred post-trade starting lineup of Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Kel’el Ware, Tyler Herro and Davion Mitchell, which entered 1-1. – From there, Nikola Jovic and Duncan Robinson again entered together as the first two...

Tyler Herro’s 40 again not enough as Heat fall 120-113 to Bucks; Jovic injured

MILWAUKEE – The formula for this Miami Heat roster in the post-Jimmy Butler era to beat a team of the Milwaukee Bucks’ caliber is relatively basic: perfection. Sunday night, the Heat got just about that from Tyler Herro, and it still wasn’t enough, while also suffering a debilitating injury to their rotation in what turned into a 120-113 loss to the Bucks at Fiserv Forum. “It’s frustrating,” coach Erik Spoelstra said, “but we’re making some progress and we just have to stay with it. We have to show collective grit and resolve.” Falling again after holding a double-digit second-half lead,...

Tyler Herro becomes fifth Miami Heat player to win NBA All-Star 3-point contest

By JOSH DUBOW SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Miami’s Tyler Herro edged out Golden State’s Buddy Hield to win the 3-point contest at the NBA’s All-Star Saturday night. Damian Lillard missed a chance to join Larry Bird and Craig Hodges as the only players to three-peat as 3-point champions with his score of 18 falling one point short of Herro for the final spot in the three-person final. Herro became the fifth member of the Heat to win the contest, but the first in 14 years. The others have been Glen Rice (1995), Jason Kapono (2007), Daequan Cook (2009) and James Jones (2011). Herro followed up his...

Winderman’s view: No matter the remix, Celtics still have the Heat’s number

MIAMI — Observations and other notes of interest from Monday night’s 103-85 loss to the Boston Celtics: – Hope ruled the morning. – “Stuff happened and it feels like a new team,” Heat center Bam Adebayo said after shootaround. – Reality ruled the evening. – For all the volume the Heat secured at last week’s NBA trading deadline for Jimmy Butler, they did not secure a star. – That’s not who Andrew Wiggins is. – Nor Davion Mitchell. – Or Kyle Anderson. – Each a supporting player. – And with Tyler Herro out with a stomach illness, not much support on this night. – With all due respect to...

Heat break out trade additions and then break down in 103-85 loss to Celtics

MIAMI – Not good enough with Jimmy Butler. Not good enough with Jimmy Butler’s replacements. And, so, a losing record now for the Miami Heat, at 25-26, after Monday night’s 103-85 loss to the Boston Celtics at Kaseya Center. Granted, the Heat were without All-Star guard Tyler Herro, due to  stomach illness, but the Celtics, by contrast, were more than capable of stomaching their absences of Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday, getting 33 points from Jayson Tatum and 16 points and 10 rebounds from Kristaps Porzingis. As for the Butler replacement parts, it was a largely uneven debut night. Andrew...
