Trevor Etienne among key Gators banged-up as UF prepares for Vanderbilt’s homecoming visit

The Florida football team is feeling the aftereffects of the Gators’ trampling at Kentucky. Several key players, including leading rusher Trevor Etienne, could miss Saturday’s homecoming visit from Vanderbilt slated for 4 p.m. in the Swamp. Starting center Kingsley Eguakun is questionable with a right ankle injury after he appeared in just his second game for Florida (3-2, 1-1 SEC). Left tackle Austin Barber is listed as questionable with a lower body injury. “We’ve got a number of players that have been modified throughout the week,” Napier said following Wednesday’s practice. “We’ll be evaluating...

GATORS PODCAST: Florida backslides during uninspired Charlotte win as Kentucky visit looms (Ep. 187)

The Gators slipped by Charlotte 22-7 in the Swamp, struggling to build on their win against Tennessee and ride a wave of momentum into a two-month stretch of SEC play. Graham Mertz, Ricky Pearsall, Trey Smack and a suffocating defense gave fans something to cheer. But the overall performance continued to raise red flags about special teams, play-calling and the team’s O-line. During the latest Swamp things, Edgar and Mark dig into what it all means and whether it ultimately matters as Kentucky is sure to have the No. 23 Gators’ attention. Back on the roller coaster (:00) Ricky Pearsall’s...

Lackluster Gators slip by Charlotte behind stout defense, 5 field goals

GAINESVILLE — Florida’s 22-7 win against Charlotte on Saturday night marked the Gators’ first three-game winning streak under Billy Napier but felt like a hollow victory. It could be a warning sign with SEC play set to ramp up Sept. 30 at Kentucky, winner of three of the past five meetings. “It’s hard to win,” Napier said. “We had to grind that one out. Half the teams in college football lost and the Gators won.  “Are we happy with a lot of the things that went on out there? No.” Napier’s squad failed to build on the momentum of an emotional and resounding 29-16 win against Tennessee but dispatched...

Are college coaches using mental health waivers for their own selfish benefit? | Commentary

No, Mack Brown, shame on you. Shame on you and your hypocritical coaching colleagues for seemingly exploiting and perhaps even inventing a player’s mental health issues to skirt the NCAA’s multiple transfer rules. Brown, North Carolina’s football coach, had a well-choreographed temper tantrum recently when the NCAA denied the immediate eligibility waiver of Tar Heels transfer receiver Tez Walker. NCAA rules allow players to transfer once without sitting out a year while they are undergraduates, but since Walker has transferred twice before he needed a waiver to play this season. After Gators...

Florida earns significant SEC-opening win against Tennessee

GAINESVILLE — Quarterback Graham Mertz could not miss, Trevor Etienne could not be contained and Tennessee’s high-powered offense could not contend with an inspired, sold-out Swamp as the Gators seized control and then held on for an SEC-opening win. It added up to a 29-16 decision against No. 11 Vols and a long-awaited SEC signature win for embattled coach Billy Napier. Coach Josh Heupel’s Vols’ rallied but could not overcome mistakes and missed opportunities. An offsides penalty by defensive tackle Kurott Garland with UF facing fourth-and-1 from its 34-yard line extended the Gators’ drive...

South Carolina eliminates UCF softball, sets up regional final vs. FSU

TALLAHASSEE — The  South Carolina softball team used a 5-run fifth inning and scored 4 more in the seventh Saturday night to beat UCF 10-1 and secure a spot in Sunday’s NCAA Tallahassee Regional Final against No. 3 Florida State at the Seminole Softball Complex. The Gamecocks led 1-0 after stealing home in the second inning and took advantage of costly errors made by the Knights in the fifth to take control of the game. With the bases loaded and one run already scored in the inning, South Carolina’s Aaliyah White singled up the middle with two outs. As runners rounded the bases, an errant throw...

UCF, FSU softball capture wins to open NCAA Tallahassee Regional

TALLAHASSEE — Chloe Evans did a little bit of everything for UCF softball Friday night. The junior transfer from Minnesota went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while helping the Knights capture a critical first win, 6-1, against South Carolina in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at the Seminole Softball Complex. “It doesn’t matter who’s pitching or how hot they are, she’s a tough out,” UCF coach Cindy Ball-Malone said about Evans. “She’ll just keep knocking on their door until something goes through and then when they try to make an adjustment, she does something else.” The Knights (40-19) struck...

Wichita State transfer Jaykwon Walton commits to UCF men’s basketball

Hours after receiving a commitment from UMKC 4-star transfer Shemarri Allen, UCF men’s basketball landed a pledge from a second top prospect out of the portal Thursday night. Wichita State guard Jaykwon Walton announced his intentions to join Johnny Dawkins and the Knights for their inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference. A 4-star transfer on 247Sports.com, Walton ranked as the nation’s No. 91 overall prospect in the portal, according to the recruiting website. The move, however, comes with controversy. Walton, who averaged a career-high 13.9 points as the Shockers’ leading scorer last season,...
