Giants rally with 3 runs in 7th to beat NL-worst Marlins; Miami manager Skip Schumaker tossed

MIAMI — Jung Hoo Lee had two hits, including a tying single in the seventh inning, and the San Francisco Giants overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the NL-worst Miami Marlins 4-3 on Monday night. The Marlins fell to 3-14, and their frustration boiled over in the bottom of the eighth when plate umpire Laz Díaz ejected manager Skip Schumaker. First, Schumaker emerged from the dugout and had a heated exchange with Díaz but wasn’t tossed. During Nick Gordon’s pinch-hit appearance, Schumaker again stepped onto the field and argued with Díaz before he was ejected. Schumaker said his disagreement...

Shocking twist in carjacking of South Florida woman leads to arrest of deputy

The horrific saga of a South Florida woman carjacked at gunpoint in Winter Springs last week and later found dead took a bizarre turn Monday when Seminole authorities linked the case to the recent arrest of an Orange County deputy and the brutal death of a tow truck driver, who was shot at least 100 times. Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said Monday that investigators are still searching for the people involved in the April 11 carjacking of Katherine Guerrero De Aguasvivas, 31, of Homestead. Her body was found late Thursday in Osceola County, inside the scorched remains of the white Dodge...

NASA confirms mystery object that crashed through roof of Florida home came from space station

NAPLES — NASA confirmed Monday that a mystery object that crashed through the roof of a Florida home last month was a chunk of space junk from equipment discarded at the International Space Station. The cylindrical object that tore through the home in Naples on March 8 was subsequently taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral for analysis. The space agency said it was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal. The pallet was jettisoned from the space station in 2021, and the load was expected to eventually fully burn up on entry into Earth’s atmosphere,...

FSU commit Ethan Pritchard remains firm with Seminoles, but UCF on his mind

UCF had about 50 recruits on hand Friday night at the Knights’ annual spring game, and several local players expressed their interest in possibly playing at the Bounce House one day. One of those interested onlookers was Ethan Pritchard, a standout linebacker at Seminole High who is currently committed to FSU. “I’m 100 percent committed, but I’m exploring right now,” Pritchard said. Pritchard, who is currently ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Sentinel’s 2025 Central Florida recruiting rankings, said it’s possible that he could consider joining the Seminole pipeline to UCF. That pipeline has...

Reinhart gets his 55th goal in OT as Panthers top Buffalo, clinch home ice for Round 1

By TIM REYNOLDS (AP Sports Writer) SUNRISE — All Florida needed was one point to ensure its postseason run would start at home. And once that task was done, Sam Reinhart decided to put an exclamation point on things. Reinhart got his 55th goal of the season with 1:02 left in overtime, and the Panthers clinched home ice for at least Round 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs by beating the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in the next-to-last regular-season game for both teams on Saturday. “We’re excited about the challenge ahead,” Reinhart said. “It’s starting for real pretty soon. Do what you can to get home-ice...

DJ Lagway is exciting, but UF’s future is in Graham Mertz’s hands | Commentary

GAINESVILLE — This timeless phenomenon is as old as college football itself: Fans, almost without fail, will embrace the potential and promise of the future more than the steadiness and stability of the present. They want to play with their new Buzz Lightyear action figure while casting old reliable Woody, the pull-string cowboy doll, into the deepest recesses of the toy box. Who cares if Florida Gators senior quarterback Graham Mertz led the SEC with a 72.9% completion rate and had a 20-to-3 touchdown-to-interception comparison last year? Who cares if he has 43 college starts on his resume? Who...

Hurricanes land four-star prospect Brock Schott, adding second top tight end to 2025 class

The Hurricanes continue to raid the Midwest for tight ends. Four-star Indiana tight end Brock Schott announced his pledge to the Hurricanes on Saturday night following Miami’s spring game, just five days after UM added a commitment from four-star Ohio tight end Luka Gilbert.  Schott, who is listed as the No. 10 tight end and No. 226 player in the class by 247Sports’ composite rankings, is UM’s seventh commit for the 2025 class. He chose the Hurricanes over offers from Florida State and Ohio State, among others. Schott, a standout at Indiana’s Leo High, is listed at 6-foot-3 and weighs about...
