Panthers winger Anthony Duclair traded to San Jose for center Steven Lorentz, draft pick

Saturday was not just a day of free agent signings for the Florida Panthers. They made another big move at the opening of free agency, this time via a trade. Anthony Duclair, a three-year winger with the Panthers, has been dealt to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The move clears just under $2 million in cap space for the Panthers next season. Lorentz, 27, played 80 games for the Sharks last season, recording 10 goals and nine assists. He was a 2015 seventh-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes before being traded to San Jose last summer. Rumors...

Marlins buried by Braves’ six home runs as Atlanta continues dominant run

ATLANTA — Michael Soroka won his first home start in nearly three years, Matt Olson homered twice and drove in five runs and the National League-leading Atlanta Braves won their sixth straight game with a 16-4 rout of the Miami Marlins on Friday night. Ronald Acuña Jr., Eddie Rosario, Austin Riley and Sean Murphy also went deep to give the Braves 153 homers, by far the most in the majors. They hit 61 in June to set a franchise record for a single month, breaking the mark of 56 from June 2019. Soroka (1-1) took the mound in a home game for the first time since Aug. 3, 2020, when he tore his Achilles...

Marlins grab their first three-game sweep of Red Sox, are more than 13 games over .500 for first time since 2003

BOSTON — Jean Segura’s infield single broke up Brayan Bello’s no-hit bid with nobody out in the eighth inning, and the Miami Marlins followed with three more hits to break a scoreless tie and beat the Boston Red Sox 2-0 on Thursday night. Bello held the Marlins hitless through seven, retiring major league batting leader Luis Arraez all three times he faced him. Arraez, who also drew an intentional walk in the eighth, saw his batting average drop from .396 to .392. “That guy threw a really good game,” Arraez said. “He was nasty today.” Bello (5-5) struck out five and walked one. He was charged...

Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk named to Second All-Star Team, finishes third in Hart Trophy voting

Matthew Tkachuk had a phenomenal first season with the Florida Panthers, but it wasn’t enough to top Edmonton’s superstar Connor McDavid. Tkachuk came up short, finishing third for the Hart Memorial Trophy at the NHL Awards Monday night in Nashville. However, he still earned an accolade as a Second All-Star Team selection. McDavid took home the Hart Trophy, which is given “to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team.” Boston’s David Pastrnak was the third finalist and placed second with 1,053 voting points. Tkachuk recorded 741 and McDavid ran away with it with 1,951. McDavid,...

LSU crushes Florida to win first College World Series title since 2009

OMAHA, Neb. — A day after it gave up the most runs ever in a College World Series game, LSU cranked up its offense and won its first national title since 2009 with an 18-4 victory over Florida on Monday night in the third and deciding game of the finals. LSU (54-17) staved off elimination three times in bracket play and bounced back from the humiliating 24-4 loss in Game 2 to claim its seventh championship, second to Southern California’s 12. The Tigers wiped out an early 2-0 deficit with a six-run second inning against Jac Caglianone (7-4). The runs kept coming until they finished with the...

Florida Gators, down 3-1, score 23 consecutive runs to rout LSU, force winner-take-all CWS title game

OMAHA, Neb. — Florida had been involved in more close games than any other team at the College World Series this year. That changed in a big way Sunday, when the Gators unleashed an offensive barrage of historic proportions. Florida, who trailed 3-1 in the third inning, scored the most runs in a CWS game and came up one short of the record for largest margin of victory in a 24-4 rout of LSU that forced a deciding Game 3 of the finals. The Gators (54-16) hit six home runs on a windy day at Charles Schwab Field and pounded LSU (53-17) pitching for a CWS record-tying 23 hits a day after Ty Floyd...

Puk blown save soils Luzardo stellar start as Pirates pass Marlins in ninth to snap 10-game skid

MIAMI — Carlos Santana broke a ninth-inning tie with an RBI single and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a 10-game losing streak, rallying to beat the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Friday night. Down 1-0 after eight innings, Pittsburgh scored three runs against relievers A.J. Puk (3-2) and Dylan Floro. “When you’re in the midst of a losing streak and you get down to the ninth and you have their closer, it’s really easy to give away at bats,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “And we didn’t. We were able to manufacture the way we’ve done. I’m really proud of them.” Josh Palacios had a pinch leadoff single...

Miami Heat select UCLA’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. at No. 18 in NBA draft

MIAMI – Less than two weeks after their season came to an end with a Game 5 loss to the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat turned to the future at Thursday’s NBA draft with the selection of UCLA swingman Jaime Jaquez Jr. with the No. 18 choice. Because the NBA does not reseed teams based on playoff results, the Heat wound up picking in the middle of the first round in the wake of closing the 2022-23 regular season at 44-38. For the Heat, the addition of 22-year-old Jaquez adds to a youth component that also includes 20-year-old 2022 first-round pick Nikola Jovic, who went No. 27...

Marlins rally after Garrett’s dominant performance, top Pirates in series opener

MIAMI — Garrett Cooper doubled, singled and hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Miami Marlins beat Pittsburgh 6-4 Thursday night and extended the Pirates’ losing streak to 10 games. Trailing 4-1, the Marlins rallied against Pirates relievers Dauri Moreta and Carmen Mlodzinski in the eighth. Moreta allowed a leadoff double to Jonathan Davis and then walked Luis Arraez and Jorge Soler. Mlodzinski (0-1) relieved Moreta and gave up a two-run single by Bryan De La Cruz. Jesús Sánchez reached on a fielder’s choice before Garrett drove Mlodzinski’s first pitch over the wall in...
