MIAMI — Nolan Arenado homered, Jack Flaherty pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 3-0 on Thursday night to avoid a series sweep.
St. Louis dropped the first three games of the series. Two were one-run defeats, including a 10-9 walk-off loss Wednesday night.
Flaherty (6-5) struck out five, walked two and allowed nine hits. He also threw six scoreless innings against the New York Yankees on July 1 and has lowered his ERA from 4.95 to 4.27 in the two starts.

MIAMI — Two runs scored on a throwing error by Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks with one out in the ninth inning, and the Miami Marlins rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9 on Wednesday night.
With Yuli Gurriel on first after a single and pinch-runner Garrett Hampson on second, Joey Wendle hit a dribbler back to Hicks (1-5). The pitcher’s high, errant throw got past first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to allow both runners to score.

NEW YORK — The Miami Marlins will have a second representative at the All-Star Game in Seattle after slugger Jorge Soler was added as a reserve on Sunday evening.
For the Cuban-born Soler, the 2021 World Series Most Valuable Player while with the Atlanta Braves, it will be his first All-Star Game.
Soler, who has 22 home runs, also had 22 round-trippers for the Royals on selection day in 2019 but was left off the squad. He was hitting .233 with 55 RBI four years ago and is hitting .241 with 47 RBI heading into Monday’s play.

BOSTON — Jean Segura’s infield single broke up Brayan Bello’s no-hit bid with nobody out in the eighth inning, and the Miami Marlins followed with three more hits to break a scoreless tie and beat the Boston Red Sox 2-0 on Thursday night.
Bello held the Marlins hitless through seven, retiring major league batting leader Luis Arraez all three times he faced him. Arraez, who also drew an intentional walk in the eighth, saw his batting average drop from .396 to .392.
