JACKSONVILLE — The Miami Dolphins defense was forced to defend its end zone four times Saturday as Jacksonville entered the red zone on four first-half possessions and took a 17-6 halftime lead in the preseason finale at Everbank Stadium. Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson (8 of 13, 56 yards, no touchdowns, 31.7 passer rating) threw two interceptions, one resulting in a field goal and the other in a touchdown for the Jaguars.  But running back Salvon Ahmed pushed his case for the 53-man roster (cuts must be made by 4 p.m. Tuesday) by rushing for 43 yards on four carries, the highlight...

MIAMI GARDENS — We’re still getting to know Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, but he turned heads once again Friday when he listed the shortcomings for his defense. I have no problem with Fangio’s candor. In fact, I like it. But I thought the defense, which had a good day in Saturday’s scrimmage, was coming along pretty well, and showing some promising depth. Fangio’s media session on Friday, however, caused questions to start creeping into my thoughts about this defense. Coach Mike McDaniel isn’t concerned about his defense or Fangio’s candor. “When we were fortunate enough to...

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins will need cornerbacks to surface this training camp after the devastating blow of Jalen Ramsey’s left knee injury and surgery. While they signed a veteran in Eli Apple and are hopeful second-round draft pick Cam Smith can emerge quickly, what if the forgotten Noah Igbinoghene, the 2020 first-round pick, could finally be the one to produce? He has gotten a greater opportunity in camp following Ramsey’s injury, and at Saturday’s scrimmage at Hard Rock Stadium, he had an interception of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa while defending star wideout Tyreek Hill. “I...

MIAMI GARDENS — Five times. Or, roughly an average of once a minute. That’s how often new Miami cornerback Eli Apple was asked about his relationship with Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill during Apple’s six-minute, 11-second post-practice interview Sunday. Yes, Apple, who officially signed with Dolphins on Sunday, replacing injured cornerback Jalen Ramsey (knee), will compete for a starting job as a boundary (outside) cornerback. But we’ll get to the football stuff later.  This is soap opera time. All told, Apple, the 2016 first-round pick by the New York Giants, was asked 23...

The Miami Dolphins will have a major national — and even international — spotlight on them in the 2023 season. After the Wednesday leak of the Dolphins being part of the NFL’s first Black Friday game, at the New York Jets, and visiting Frankfurt, Germany for their tilt with the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami received three more national standalone games upon the full release of the league schedule Thursday night for a total of five such contests. The Dolphins visit the New England Patriots in Week 2 on Sept. 17 and get the Eagles in Philadelphia in Week 7, Oct. 22, for a pair of prime-time...
