Questionnaire: Rebecca Shelton, candidate for Boynton Beach mayor

Name: Rebecca Shelton

Campaign website: voterebeccashelton.com

Date, place of birth: 6-29-1975, Youngstown, Ohio

City Manager Dan Dugger was involved in a verbal confrontation in December involving shouted obscenities just before a commission meeting. Do you retain confidence in the manager’s ability to continue in his position, and why or why not?
Despite his momentary lapse of good judgement, I feel it is only fair to evaluate his performance based on my personal interactions with him if I am elected to serve as Mayor.

An internal affairs police report involving a possible drunk driving incident by a girlfriend of City Commissioner Thomas Turkin was closed in his favor without anyone interviewing the officers at the scene. Would you support reopening this inquiry to include officers’ statements to provide a more complete report, or was this case investigated properly?
I would not support reopening this inquiry. The City has many more important issues to address.

What are the plans for the future of the city’s oldest home, the Andrews House, and do you agree or disagree that such buildings are worth saving?
I support saving the Andrews home and support the commission for extending the demolition time to find a solution to relocate the home.

Do you support or oppose a proposed annexation of 38 mostly residential areas west of the city that could add at least 35,000 people to the city’s population? Why or why not?
No. The city must do a better job providing police services, fire services, code enforcement and other city services to its existing residents before it considers annexing any additional properties.

Is the city too pro-development, or too anti-development, or does it strike the right balance between growth and preservation?
Various parts of the city have different needs. I support the continued redevelopment of the downtown area. I share residents’ concerns about too much development in the western corridor.

What distinguishes you most from your opponent(s)?
As a 20-year resident of Boynton Beach, a small business owner in Boynton Beach, Licensed Real Estate Broker, and active member of our community, I know Boynton Beach. I have witnessed, firsthand, the challenges our city has faced. I know the incredible potential our city has, and I am committed to making our city a place where every voice is heard, every neighborhood is cared for, and every resident can take pride in calling this home.
