Winderman’s view: Heat show vs. Hawks the ability to do more with less

Observations and other notes of interest from Saturday night’s 117-109 victory over the Atlanta Hawks: – Because this is what the Heat do, find a way to make it a game even when the roster says otherwise. – This time no Jimmy Butler or Tyler Herro. – But, as coach Erik Spoelstra said pregame, “We have a lot of guys that have been chomping at the bit to try to get more minutes, and they’re going to get their opportunity now. The guys are prepared.” – So Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Duncan Robinson as starters. – A return by Kevin Love. – Time for Dru Smith and Jamal Cain. – And there it stood, a 21-point...

Adebayo, Jaquez lead Heat past Hawks 117-109 in absences of Herro, Butler

ATLANTA – The margin of error was slight even after going up 21 in the first half. With Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler out for the Miami Heat, that simply is the reality. So even with Bam Adebayo a portrait of efficiency and even with Jaime Jaquez Jr. playing with more maturity than should be expected from a rookie, there the Heat were Saturday night in a fourth-quarter scramble in what ultimately turned into a 117-109 victory against the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena. The absence of Herro will be an ongoing reality, after the fifth-year guard sustained a Grade 2 ankle sprain in Wednesday...

Memo to Billy Napier: Mathematically challenged Gators are becoming a punchline | Commentary

Running off at the typewriter. … A word of warning for Florida Gators coach Billy Napier: You and your coaching staff better clean up your act quickly because you are becoming a punchline — and that’s never good. Once the laugh track cranks up, it cruelly and constantly perpetuates itself in viral videos and Internet memes. Like last week, at the end of the Arkansas game when the kicking team comically scurried onto the field at the same time the offense was still trying to line up to spike the ball with a few seconds left.  As a result of all the chaos and buffoonery, reliable kicker Trey Smack...

Feeling crowded yet? The US Census Bureau estimates the world’s population has passed 8 billion

By MEAD GRUVER (Associated Press) The human species has topped 8 billion, with longer lifespans offsetting fewer births, but world population growth continues a long-term trend of slowing down, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday. The bureau estimates the global population exceeded the threshold Sept. 26, a precise date the agency said to take with a grain of salt. The United Nations estimated the number was passed 10 months earlier, having declared November 22, 2022, the “Day of 8 Billion,” the Census Bureau pointed out in a statement. The discrepancy is due to countries counting people differently...
