83-year-old cyclist killed in crash with garbage truck on Florida’s Turnpike

A garbage truck slammed into an 83-year-old bicyclist on Florida’s Turnpike in Davie early Friday morning, killing him, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred a little after 5 a.m., when the 83-year-old man from Lauderhill was riding his bicycle southbound in the outside travel lane of the turnpike, south of Interstate 595, according to an FHP media release. The roadway is a “limited access facility,” and riding a bicycle there is illegal.

A 48-year old man from Lauderdale Lakes was driving the garbage truck southbound in the same lane when he hit the rear end of the bicycle, which had “impeded” the truck’s path, the release said. The crash sent the bicyclist flying into the outside merge lane. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver of the garbage truck was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
